Do you know who your Father is?
Do you know who your father is? There have been inquisitions throughout history to try to discover who the father was. In some cases kings and countries hung in the balance. Today with DNA testing, sure proof is available to settle this type of question.
Is there any test to know if God is our Father?
When Jesus was approached by a group of people who wanted to destroy him He said "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and now am here. I have not come on my own; but he sent me. John 8:42 42 (NIV) From this verse we find that not everyone who claims to be of God is really of God. Some people may have a "family resemblance," but not really be of the Father. The question for each of us then becomes, If you were of the Father, then... Then what?
Loving Christ is a difficult thing for some to understand. Scripture again and again teaches us that God through Christ loves us. Is only natural that we would return that love. When we accept his love and respond to it we receive a new birth, and God is truly then our Father.
Jesus expanded on this in John 15:9-14 9 "As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. 12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. There perhaps many ways to show that God is our father, but the most powerful is that we love Christ, and we obey his command to love. When we truly have love and compassion for our family, our friends, our work-mates, and the people we encounter day by day, the Father will be seen in us.
I John 3:1-3 1 How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. 3 Everyone who has this hope in him purifies himself, just as he is (NIV)
